Whistler via the Sea to Sky Highway
One of the most scenic drives in North America — the Sea to Sky Highway (Highway 99) from Vancouver to Whistler follows the coast and then climbs through mountains. In winter, Whistler Blackcomb is one of the premier ski resorts in the world. In summer, the mountain biking, hiking, and village atmosphere make it equally worthwhile.
Squamish: Halfway Worth Stopping For
About halfway between Vancouver and Whistler, Squamish hosts excellent markets and is the gateway to dramatic hiking. The Stawamus Chief — a granite monolith with several hiking routes to the summit — is one of the better half-day hikes in the region.
Sea to Sky Gondola
Near Squamish, the gondola ascends to a ridge with panoramic views of Howe Sound and the surrounding mountains. A suspension bridge, hiking trails, and a summit lodge make it a complete experience.
Stanley Park
A 400-hectare old-growth forest park on a peninsula in downtown Vancouver. The Seawall — a paved path around the park's perimeter — is one of the best urban walks in Canada. Rent a bike and do the full loop.
Seaplanes from Downtown
The seaplane terminal near Canada Place operates scheduled flights to Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands, and Seattle. Watching the planes take off and land from the waterfront is a genuinely enjoyable spectacle.
