Plaza Barrios and the Historic Center
The civic heart of San Salvador — the Metropolitan Cathedral, the National Palace, and the Rosario Church (a striking brutalist structure with stunning stained glass interior) all face the central plaza. The Rosario Church in particular is an architectural surprise — plain concrete outside, extraordinary light inside. The area is most alive during weekday hours.
Zona Rosa and Colonia Escalon
San Salvador's upscale zone has the best concentration of international restaurants, craft cocktail bars, and safe walking streets. The Multiplaza and La Gran Via shopping centers are here. This is where expats and the Salvadoran middle class spend their evenings — a comfortable, lively area for a first-time visitor.
Santa Ana Volcano (Ilamatepec)
El Salvador's highest volcano at 2,381 metres has an active crater containing a stunning turquoise-green acidic lake. The hike from the ranger station takes 2-3 hours each way on a well-marked trail. Views from the rim across the surrounding volcanoes and Lake Coatepeque are extraordinary. Always check current volcanic activity status before going — the volcano has been intermittently active in recent decades.
Museum of Art (MARTE)
El Salvador's premier art museum in Colonia San Benito features rotating exhibitions of Salvadoran and Central American contemporary and historical art. Free on Sundays. Genuinely world-class for a relatively small institution.
