San Diego Zoo & Safari Park
The Zoo in Balboa Park is world-class and easily fills a full day — the koala and panda exhibits draw the biggest crowds early, so hit those first. If you have a second day, the Safari Park in Escondido (about 40 minutes north) is a different, more open-range experience with fewer crowds. A combo ticket saves money if you're doing both.
Balboa Park
Beyond the zoo, Balboa Park itself is packed with Spanish Colonial Revival architecture, 17 museums, and the beautiful (and free) Botanical Building. The first Tuesday of each month, many museums offer free admission on a rotating basis — check the schedule before you go.
La Jolla Cove & the Sea Lions
La Jolla Cove is stunning for snorkeling and tide pools, and the nearby rocks are covered in wild sea lions — just don't get closer than the posted signs suggest, they bite. Parking is tight; arrive before 10am on weekends or plan to walk a few blocks from a side street.
Pacific Beach & Mission Beach Boardwalk
A classic Southern California boardwalk scene — bikes, roller skates, surf shops, and Belmont Park's old wooden roller coaster (the Giant Dipper, built in 1925). Rent a beach cruiser and ride the boardwalk from Mission Beach up to Pacific Beach at sunset.
Coronado & the Hotel del Coronado
Take the ferry from downtown's Broadway Pier (cheaper and more scenic than driving over the bridge) to Coronado Island. Walk the beach past the historic Hotel del Coronado — even if you're not staying there, the lobby and grounds are open to wander, and the beach here has a reddish "mercury" sand shimmer at sunset from mica flecks.
Gaslamp Quarter
Downtown's historic entertainment district, with Victorian-era buildings now packed with restaurants, rooftop bars, and clubs. Great for an evening out, but it gets loud and crowded on weekend nights — go on a Wednesday or Thursday for a mellower version of the same scene.
USS Midway Museum
A decommissioned aircraft carrier turned museum on the downtown waterfront, with restored fighter jets on the flight deck and audio tours narrated by former crew members. Budget at least three hours — it's bigger than it looks from outside.
Sunset Cliffs & Point Loma
Dramatic sandstone cliffs along the Point Loma peninsula, one of the best free sunset spots in the city. Combine it with the Cabrillo National Monument nearby for tide pools and views over the entire San Diego Bay.
