Colosseum & Roman Forum
The most iconic ancient site in the Western world. Book combined Colosseum + Roman Forum + Palatine Hill tickets online weeks in advance — walk-up queues are punishing. Early morning (doors open at 9am) or late afternoon are the least crowded times. The Roman Forum and Palatine Hill are included in the same ticket and often overlooked by visitors who leave after the Colosseum.
Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel
Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling is genuinely as extraordinary as promised. Book first-entry timed tickets online at https://www.vatican.va — the museums receive 20,000+ visitors daily in peak season and the walk-up queue is devastating. The Sistine Chapel doesn't allow taking pictures. Please respect the rules and enjoy the art.
Trevi Fountain — Arrive Before Sunrise
The Trevi Fountain at 6am, when it's lit and nearly empty, is one of those travel experiences that justifies getting out of bed at 5:30am. By 9am, it's completely inaccessible as a photo subject. An evening visit is also recommended for a different experience.
Trastevere
Rome's most atmospheric neighborhood — medieval streets, ivy-draped walls, vibrant restaurants, and the kind of authentic Roman evening life that the tourist center can't replicate. Worth spending an evening here for dinner, even if you're staying elsewhere.
The Pantheon
On the first Sunday of every month, the Pantheon is free to enter. It's one of the best-preserved building from ancient Rome and one of the most perfectly proportioned structures ever built. A ticket is still required to be obtained in advance via their website. On all other days, general admission is fairly inexpensive.
