South Beach
The stretch of sand and Ocean Drive scene most people picture when they think "Miami." Go for the beach itself in the morning before it gets crowded and hot, then walk Ocean Drive in the late afternoon light when the Art Deco buildings' pastel colors really pop.
Art Deco Historic District
One of the largest concentrations of Art Deco architecture in the world, roughly bounded by 5th and 23rd Streets on Miami Beach. The Art Deco Welcome Center on Ocean Drive runs guided walking tours that explain what you're actually looking at — worth it if you want more than photos.
Wynwood Walls
An outdoor museum of large-scale murals from internationally known street artists, at the center of the broader Wynwood Arts District. The surrounding blocks are packed with galleries, breweries, and coffee shops — budget a few hours to wander, not just see the Walls themselves.
Little Havana & Calle Ocho
Walk Calle Ocho (SW 8th Street) for Cuban coffee windows, cigar rollers, and Domino Park, where a long-running crowd of mostly older locals plays dominoes daily. Visit on the last Friday of the month for Viernes Culturales, a free street festival with live music and art vendors.
Biscayne Bay Boat Tour
A boat tour past the mansions of Star Island and Millionaire's Row gives a totally different angle on Miami than the beach or the Deco district. Several operators run out of Bayside Marketplace and Haulover; book the smaller boats over the giant party-boat operators for a better experience.
Key Biscayne & Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park
A quieter, more residential island connected by causeway, with a lighthouse-anchored state park at its southern tip and calmer water than South Beach. A good half-day escape from the crowds.
Fort Lauderdale
About 30 miles north, Fort Lauderdale trades South Beach's density for a calmer, more upscale beach scene, plus the Riverwalk and the canal-laced "Venice of America" district — worth a day trip, or a base if you want beach quiet with easy access back to Miami.
Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM)
A striking waterfront building on Biscayne Bay with a strong contemporary art collection and hanging gardens — a good air-conditioned break from beach heat, with genuinely good bay views from its terraces.
