Space Center Houston
The official visitor center for NASA's Johnson Space Center, about 25 minutes south of downtown. The tram tour into the working Johnson Space Center campus — including historic Mission Control — is the highlight and requires timed booking, so reserve online before you go. Budget a full half-day minimum.
The Museum District
Nineteen museums and cultural institutions clustered around Hermann Park, including the Museum of Fine Arts Houston and the Houston Museum of Natural Science. Several offer free or discounted admission on certain days of the week — check schedules in advance.
Buffalo Bayou Park
A 160-acre park winding along the bayou just west of downtown, with hike-and-bike trails, kayak rentals, and the Waugh Bridge bat colony at dusk. The Water Works and skate park areas are popular with families; sunset paddles offer a great skyline view.
Houston's Food Scene
One of the most diverse food cities in the US — Vietnamese in Midtown and along Bellaire ("Asiatown"), Tex-Mex, Gulf Coast seafood, and a serious barbecue scene. Skip the tourist strip and eat where the neighborhoods actually eat.
The Menil Collection & Rothko Chapel
A free, world-class private art collection in a quiet residential neighborhood, alongside the famously meditative Rothko Chapel next door. A completely different pace from the Museum District — quiet, contemplative, and free.
Minute Maid Park & Downtown Sports
Home of the Astros, with a retractable roof that makes it comfortable even in Houston's brutal summer heat. Downtown is also walkable to the Toyota Center (Rockets) for a combined game-and-dinner night.
The Heights
A historic, walkable neighborhood northwest of downtown with restored bungalows, boutique shops, and a lively bar and restaurant scene along 19th Street and White Oak. Good half-day wander outside the downtown core.
