The Walled City (Ciudad Amurallada)
One of the best-preserved colonial walled cities in the Americas — a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The multi-colored buildings, narrow streets, and bougainvillea-draped balconies are exactly as beautiful as the photographs suggest. Walk the walls at sunset for the best light and a view over the entire historic center.
Getsemaní
The neighborhood just outside the city walls was Cartagena's working-class barrio and is now its most interesting district. Street art, salsa music spilling from doorways, outdoor bars, and local food vendors make it the best place to spend an evening. Gentrification is progressing but the neighborhood still has an authentic pulse.
Rosario Islands (Islas del Rosario)
An archipelago of small islands in the Caribbean, about 35km from Cartagena, with crystal-clear water and healthy coral reefs. Day trips by speedboat leave from the Muelle Turístico in the mornings. Book through a reputable operator and verify what's included — snorkeling, lunch, and stops vary by tour.
Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas
A massive 17th-century Spanish fortress built on a hill overlooking the city. The tunnel system inside is extensive and atmospheric — bring a flashlight if the guided tour doesn't provide one. Best visited in the morning before the heat becomes intense.
El Totumo Mud Volcano
A unique geological formation where mud volcanoes create a surreal landscape. While El Totumo is the most famous mud volcano in the area, there are several other mud volcanoes in the region.
