Sagrada Família
Antoni Gaudí's still-unfinished basilica is one of the most extraordinary buildings in the world — organic, hallucinatory, and unlike anything else in architecture. Book timed entry tickets weeks in advance. The morning light through the stained glass on the eastern facade (Nativity side) is extraordinary — time your visit accordingly. Tower access requires a separate, separately booked ticket.
Park Güell
Gaudí's mosaic-tiled terraced park above the city. The ticketed monumental zone (the main terrace with the famous lizard) must be booked online — walk-up access is heavily restricted. The surrounding free park areas are also worthwhile and accessible without booking.
Barceloneta Beach & the Waterfront
Barcelona is one of the few major cities with a legitimate urban beach. Barceloneta is crowded in summer but functional. Walk north to Nova Icària or Bogatell for somewhat less congestion.
El Born & Gothic Quarter
El Born is Barcelona's most genuinely alive neighborhood — independent boutiques, natural wine bars, the Santa Maria del Mar church, and the Palau de la Música Catalana nearby. The Gothic Quarter (Barri Gòtic) has the highest density of Roman and medieval structures in Europe, interspersed with tourist souvenir shops.
La Boqueria Market
The famous covered market on the Ramblas is photographically beautiful but has become largely tourist-oriented. Worth a walk through, but don't buy food here expecting authentic Barcelona prices. The Mercat de Santa Caterina in El Born is where locals actually shop.
Montserrat Monastery
A striking Benedictine monastery perched on a jagged mountain range about an hour from Barcelona. The views are spectacular, and the monastery houses the famous Black Madonna statue. Accessible by the R5 train from Plaça Catalunya. At the train station, you will purchase either a train + cogwheel (Cremallera) ticket or a train + cable car ticket. Buy the cable car ticket for a more dramatic arial view. This method requires walking up and down a few flights of stairs so it's less convenient if you have little one and strollers. Buy the cogwheel ticket for a smoother ride, yet less dramatic ride. No stairs to worry about with the cogwheel option.
